So, like the rest of the gaming world this weekend was full of 6th edition. I read through the book a few times and has about half a million "Did you see..." Calls and texts to help me miss parts I skimmed over. Overall I was impressed with the rules design behind 6th. For example.

In one game I was playing an opponent who had a bastion (not that broken might I add). He remembered reading something about being able to fire the weapons in the bastion on 'auto fire.' Well when we looked at the bastion the weapon entries were
- "Gun emplacement with (weapon)" and
- 4 emplaced heavy bolters.

I was like, 'oh crap one is a gun emplacement and one is an emplaced gun... I was pretty sure this was one of those points that GW wouldn't clarify and we would be left arguing about for 5 years. "Is an emplaced gun a gun emplacement?

Well, we then cracked open the rulebook and looked up "Gun Emplacement." (p. 105) I was surprised to see that it was actually in the rulebook under its own heading, not mixed in another paragraph about weapons or something. The definition was clear as to how it fired and who could fire it. We then looked up "emplaced weapon," and by god it was in the rules too (p. 96) not only that but it talked about automatic fire and how it works.

The issue was solved and we moved on to play our game. We didn't argue or need to dice off, the rules answered things clearly for us when previous editions of the game would have left us debating "Gun emplacement vs emplaced gun."

So, despite what you think about 6th edition and its new rules I can honestly say that the book is well written and hopefully it will stop a lot of semantic arguments in the future.

Want another example? Look up snap fire and over watch, then look up "wall of death," for flamers and tell me if flamers can fire snap shots or overwatch.

What has been your experince with rules debates in 6th edition? Has the rulebook made things clear for you?

Like a lot of the player base out there, the impending release of WH 40K 6th Edition has had me in a bit of a holding pattern. For me particularly, this started a few months ago when the rumors really started heating up. Did I really want to finish this army AND start playing 5th Edition rules just in time to have to switch everything over to a new set of rules? No, I really didn't want to do that. Finishing the army wasn't really such a big deal, but the learning of a rule-set was another matter. It didn't make any sense anymore. So, I've decided to just hold on til 6th pops and then start at the ground floor with everyone else. Although I am very familiar with 5th Ed rules, having owned them for years and watched hundreds of games played...I never actually played a game! This may sound strange, but I actually think it could be to my advantage.

If 6th Ed is as big a change as WHFB 7th Edition to 8th Edition was, you're all going to have to totally rethink the game. 8th Edition was a monumental change, requiring players to totally revamp everything from their Army Lists to Tactics to Deployment...just about everything had to be reevaluated and rethought. The other thing that required a different sort of thinking was the actual rules themselves. WHFB 6th and 7th were pretty similar as far as rules went..yeah they tweaked stuff and changed it up a bit but the learning curve wasn't very steep. Veteran players had a much harder time adjusting to 8th..lots of 'I thought is still worked this way' and 'Sorry, I must be thinking of 7th' going on. Not to mention GWs maddening habit of just removing rules without referencing that they were gone. It's really hard to have an opponent read the whole rulebook (especially during a tournament) just to prove that an old rule doesn't exist anymore. I was running into this problem a whole year after the release of 8th!!
So, I head into 6th with a clear mind..a sponge ready to delve into the book and find my own combos that will work. No preconceived ideas of 'optimal' builds. I'm really excited about this and have ramped up the modeling and painting in order to have an army ready for the table-top when 6th pops. I'm also no longer shackled by the thought that certain units I really wanted to run are going to automatically 'suck'. Of course, they still might but I'm going to add a Bike squad, an Iron Priest and a couple Forge World Models that I picked up recently. The 'Kool-Aid Man pictured below is one of them. Many tournaments are starting to allow certain FW models and rules in lists. I just think this model was too cool to pass up and hopefully I'll get to use him in the future:

I also ended up purchasing FW Dozer Blades for my Rhinos which I'm almost finished with. Not the greatest casts I've ever gotten from FW to be honest, took a lot of work to clean them up. However, I think they'll look pretty good and at least I'll be truly WYSIWYG now. I'm busy working on my Land Raider Crusader which also has FW reinforced armor and FW doors and a fully detailed and painted interior. These are the final 2 models I need to complete to get the army on the table. It certainly won't be the final build, but at least it will be playable. When that is done I plan on continuing to work on the units I mentioned above, plus a Storm Eagle that I'm picking up at Games Day. I couldn't resist the model and it's the one true Flyer (big Flyer) that is legal in Space Wolf builds..granted it's FW rules but still...

This is more of an editorial by me, rather than the normal 'Here's where the army is at'. Next series will detail the construction and painting of the LandRaider, I've been taking tons of pictures and intend to do a step-by-step. Until then, I hope everyone out there is excited about 6th..I know I am.
Quinnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17486395423633115936noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3196653280947071510.post-79533949931279362872012-06-07T08:58:00.002-07:002012-06-07T08:59:36.411-07:00Feast of Blades LIVE mission on ustream! 6:45 MST Today

Stop whining about 6th

Well, I'm here to tell you that it isn't. Come on in the water is fine.

A while back I lived in Slovenia (Next to Italy). When I was there I ran into a group of people that were fervent believers in their dogma on one particular day they came to me and told me that God was going to flood the world and that I could be saved if I went up to this hill with them where they had stored a few boats. I kindly declined and silently hoped they were wrong. Well, a few weeks later I saw them again and I asked what happened. Their reply was "It was a spiritual flooding, just as God told us it would be." I figured it was better to not ask about the boats. After that encounter life went on and sure enough they moved on to a new 'end of the world scenario.'

What is the point of this story? Well, if it isn't obvious the point is that people tend to create these sort of 'oh-noes,' with things that they are uncertain about. They make certainties out of half-information and they extrapolate that into doom and gloom.

6th edition might be the worst edition of 40k in every sense. It might ruin GT's and it may never be carried by FLGS, some other game might replace it... Then again none of this might happen to, the point is that don't make assumptions based on only a portion of the information.

I LOVE RUMORS!!! Ask any of my friends, I'm the first to talk about rumors and what it might mean about the game, but I would never go so far as to say "I won't play...It is all over," usually the rumors tend to be not that bad when grouped as a whole (Blood Angels with FNP everywhere anyone?)

Let's talk about a few of the rumors that will ruin our world and look at them rationally.

Random charge length: This isn't the best option in a game system, but in all honesty it will most likely extend the possible range of charge distances greatly, this will mean you will get into combat quicker and games will be faster/ more deadly. Faster, more deadly games are good for the hobby. If I am a casual player I can play more games with more variant builds, if I am a tournament player I can have 8-9 games in two days of a Con instead of 7.

Random psychic powers: If something is random it must be more deadly, you aren't going to put Jaws in the same pile as blood boil... If psychics get more powerful then the game goes faster and is more deadly

Allies: This is silly that people are thinking all of the sudden GT's will be ruled by GK/IG builds. It just isn't the case and I know it won't happen, why? Because I have control of that.

This article isn't to show you how things are going to be good and a golden age is upon us, it is simply that people need to stop whining about how something is going to ruin everything and then they will quit. In all honesty if the game is ruined by 6th edition please quit! I don't want to sit around hearing you complain about this and that, just find a new game and let the rest of us go on accepting 6th for what it is/ isn't.

here is the way things are likely going to go down. the 4 steps of new edition grief!
1. OMG!!! My army build sucks!!! IM SO PISSED, I WANT TO QUIT!
2. If I do ABC and XYZ then that would be super awesome.
3. Mr. Store owner, can I order 4 boxes of ABC and XYZ?
4. OMG I RULE AGAIN!!!

If that isn't the case and 6th edition 100% ruins the 40k world then I know that the powers that be will act quickly to fix the problem either by editing 6th or doing a IGT 5th edition...

Spent some time matching up the colors on the interceptor packs.

Did all the eyes in light blue, then added a coat of transparent blue to them.

Ended with more detail on the HQ’s.

That takes us to the end of week 3, total is 8.5 + 48 from the last 2 weeks = 56 ½.
That’s puts an end to all the infantry start to finish.

Had a great day working the airbrush. Mask off the flaps and
painted on the Raven.

Hit all the marines with a Minwax water-based wood stain
that was mixed 50/50 with water. Its important to mix it in a good bottle that
won’t leek when shaken. And shaking is something you will want to do as it will
settle and separate in little time.

Took the Marines inside and attached them to the bases.

Did a test pass with the blue on the force weapon. Then did
the whole lot of them in three colors including the incinerators and psy cans.

Finally some pics showing the progress so far. Not quite
done yet, but close… So close.

Today I wanted to do another quick post on what I have been up to lately with my painting. Maybe we will even get into a little bit of an artsy-fartsy-discussion...

Well, after getting my army back from Adepticon (I had some friends drive it back to CO.) I was able to hit the paint brush again. It took me a while to figure out what the heck I wanted to put on this vehicle.

After a while, My wife and I were talking and she said "why don't you do something a little more modern... Like Salvador Dali." I love Dali so I didn't need much prodding. After a quick google search I found a painting that would work: "persistence of Memory," or "MELTY CLOCKS!" as most of us call it.

As you can see in the original (above), I cropped the image down to just the tree and the clock. I could have done the whole image but it is easy to lose detail when my 'canvas,' is so small. Also, I seem to simply like cropping the image I am copying to focus on the element I am trying to convey the most... Don't ask me why.

Some noted differences:
1. His blending is vastly superior to mine. Im going to chalk that up to him being a master and me being... Well... Not a master.

The Emperor ponders the meaning of Life,
and Galactic Domination

2. My water in the background is barely seen on the horizon while his almost comes up to the branch. I did this because I felt that without the hills in the background it would look like sky because you don't have the 'surrounded by land,' perspective that the mountains provide.
3. My clock has numbers on the 7,8,9 positions while his has numbers in the 3,4,5, 6 positions. Put simply I couldn't do those numbers because my 'frame,' was completely in the way.

What does this art mean in the army?
everyone knows you can't have art without some 'deeper meaning,' lol. My first two pictures were pretty obvious with meanings (I felt). The "Creation of Adam," is the sisters of silence saying that the Emperor is Man's creator. The second painting: "The Justice Wall" was more like the sisters were portraying the Emperor as Justice itself and that his Justice was blind. This painting is trying to say that time is nothing to the emperor in the pursuit of his goals, he care not if it takes 1 year or 10,000 to achieve his visions, they will be achieved. (see! semi-artsy-farsty-discussion)

So, that is that for now. I am pretty happy about how this picture came out, though I think the blending on the square-thing could have been a little more smooth...Oh well. All in all this took me the better part of the weekend to paint the whole vehicle from black to finished, not bad. Who knows, maybe I'll go back later and touch it up some... Unlikely.

What's next?
I only have one more tank to do for this army and the last one will have some sort Picasso, I just have to find the right one (Im pretty sure I know which one though). Then I will have 2 classical pieces and 2 modern pieces. Fun stuff.

Here are my freehand tanks so far for this Custodes/ Sisters of Silence army. Comments welcome!
My Thoughts:

Storm Talon: at 11/11/11 it is already attractive for me. This is going to be competing for a slot with the Land Speeder Typhoon so lets compare it to that, shall we?

Armor: 11/11/11 VS 10/10/10 - Winner is Storm Talon
Rules: Skimmer, fast vs Flier rules - Winner is Storm Talon
Shooting: Typhoon Missile launcher vs Typhoon ML, TL Assa can, TL Lascan - W = Storm T.
Points: 130 (without upgrades) vs 90 points with upgrades - Winner is Land Speeder
Conclusion: If the Storm talon can bring a TL Las, a TL assault cannon and a Typhoon ML for under 150 it will be quite a good deal. I have a sneaking feeling though that the vehicle will clock in at about 165 with that load out, which means it will be an expensive biscuit for psiflemen. But, with the S7 missiles you might not even want to upgrade to the Typhoon ML, so... Sure the AV 11 is cool, and so are the rules allowing it to deep strike, but in all honesty that deep striking rule is pointless without a multi-melta. All in all I think the vehicle is neat and it is giving me some curiosity but Im not gaga over it... Looks cool though, like a Space marine helicopter.

Ork Fliers: Im not going to go into as much detail, mostly because I am not an ork player at all and I don't have an Ork Codex on hand to compare this with. So, here are my general thoughts...

1. Burna Bomba: I really like the "Waaagh! Plane," Rules. A few of these and a well timed Waaagh! could really shock your opponent. The sad thing about the bomb is it is one use and only S5 ap4, that thing does nothing for me, especially since it is a small blast. It would have been cool as a S8 ap4 Large Blast cause then you could go battle suit/ paladin hunting with it... I wonder what other weapons it will have cause I don't think the special rule will allow you to drop a 'one use,' item twice.

2. Dakka Jet: I don't have enough info to really say anything about this. I don't know the points and I don't know the weapon stats... If that dakka jet has a high rate of fire then it could be really cool with the strafing run and Waaagh! special rules. If not then it could be pointless... It all depends!

All in all it is really fun to see fliers in 40k. As an ex-Air Force Officer I have been wanting fliers for ages. Perhaps we will have enough now to run a 40k scale 'aeronautica Imperialis,' at the next Feast of Blades...HMMMM.
This will make a great addition to the game as 6th edition comes out. Im really excited for the TL de-icer on the Zamboni. But it has a huge downside if playing on an ice world because it can only drive in oval-patterns.

The Vespa came with a new rule "Driving on the sidewalks," this allows them to tank shock you three times in one movement phase. This can be countered by the new "Sticking out your arm," charge response. On a successful hit you knock the rider off the Vespa and he takes a s 1 'scraping his elbow,' hit.
I listen to a good deal of Podcasts, they are great for my short drive to work. Usually though, I turn them off when I get into the office and don't listen to it again until I'm back in the car. Yesterday was different, I had been hearing good things about a podcast called "The Codex Project." Since my regular podcast (11th Company) hadn't put up a new episode I decided to give this new one a listen, and the topic of the day? Broken Codex design!

In this Episode Jeff (A former store owner and games designer, iirc) and Jim (a former GW employee and game designer, iirc) just into the hornets nest that is GW game design. Their main area of focus: Codex creep.

For those of you who don't know what codex creep is let me explain. Codex creep is when the newest codex is more powerful than all the codices previous to it (or a large majority of them).

In the past few editions there was a debate about the existence or nonexistence of codex creep. Some people would call it a myth and say it doesn't exist and others would swear by it. Not until recently has there been flat out evidence of it with the GK codex, not to mention the SW and IG. Sure not every codex goes right to the top once it is issued, but for the most part the better codices are those that are newer.

The analysis of GW game design goes much further when they point out the cost for a GK strike squad member vs that of a regular tactical marine, I believe that they ended up with a total cost of 43 points per model! That would mean a GK is almost 200% underpriced for his abilities. They do admit that you can't point something out that way or nobody would play the army, but surely 20 points is too cheap.

The guys go on about how GW codex design is what is really hurting the hobby. It isn't competitive players, it isn't 5th edition, it isn't even Goatboy (though I disagree with that last one, lol). They state that 5th edition isn't an inherently bad system, but the codices are what break the whole thing.

Their suggestion? EXCELLENCE! GW takes the excellence approach in many facets of their company, from model design to Forgeworld and Black library... I doubt that people can say that those areas are not excellent in design and final product. But when it comes to rules design (particularly with a codex) the company puts on the lazy hat (it feels). For example, why not use the public as play testers to let you know things like "Psychotroke have no business in the book." Also, why not have Black Library authors write the background fluff in the codex so we don't have Matt Ward making up his horrible Driago fluff. Dan Abnett writing background fluff for IG codex anyone???

All in all this is a great podcast, they give credit to GW where it is deserved and they are critical where they fail.

It really hit home for me when they said what I have been perching for a while: saying "were a model company," doesn't excuse bad rules writing. Creating a high and tight ruleset is something that will drive sales. Codex creep might be good for the short term bottom line it is really bad for the company's long term growth potential because once you piss gamers off they usually don't come back.

All in all give this episode a listen. LINK TO THE EPISODE
-note: They really get into it at about 1 hour in...
I've resisted the notion because of this simple fact. Just because I like or dislike something that has been written why should that impact you? It really shouldn't at all, and I'm the last one to tell you whether you will enjoy a book or not. I also don't like giving away the best parts of books to someone who hasn't read it. Whether I put up a 'Spoilers' alert or not is irrelevant. You'll probably keep reading... right?... I do.
On the other hand, I am a bit of a fanatic when it comes to 40K, WHFB, Necromunda, Comics, Forgeworld, and anything else that relates to books! I haven't counted lately, but know I have over 300 books, countless other stuff (comics, GNs, codices, rulebooks..etc.) and every White Dwarf ever written. This stuff goes back to when I was a teenager and Warhammer in it's current form didn't even exist! The first White Dwarf's were completely dedicated to D&D, and yes, I played D&D back when you had to make up your own world. Greyhawk was a big deal! Anyway, I'm a Warhammer fanatic when it comes to the written word.

So, I'm thinking that a 2 or 3 word review will be appropriate. Read It! or Don't Read It! Well, that might work for you or me, but Duke has to fill space..so apparently I have to go into more detail.
In the latest of the Horus Heresy Books, number 19 at last count, you have the age-old Blue vs Red conflict brought to you by the superstar of the Black Library: Dan Abnett. Yeah, Dan is back with another side-show showdown between the Horus allied Word Bearers vs the clueless Ultramarines of Ultramar! By side-show, I mean that this another story that is occurring simultaneously or just after the Isstvan system actions. Like many of the recent HH books, it seeks to flesh out the story and account for the deeds of various Legions and Primarchs not directly involved with Isstvan or the reactions immediately following the Drop-site massacre.
The Ultramarines under the command of their Primarch, Roboute Guilliman, have been ordered to muster with the XVII Legion 'Word Bearers' and to proceed to the Veridan System. They are to destroy an Ork threat and to build a bond between their respective Legions. A bond that simply doesn't exist, due to the Emperor's dispatch of the Ultramarines to castigate the Word Bearers years earlier in action on Monarchia..something that has festered within the XVII ever since. The site for the muster is Calth, one of the Ultramar system worlds. 200,000 Legionnaires of the Ultramarines with all the accompanying support and the fleet needed to transport and protect them await the arrival of Lorgar and his host..
Of course, unbeknown to the Ultramarines, Lorgar and his Legion have treachery planned. The book is the story of that treachery and the actions that transpired.

This is Dan's fourth book in the Horus Heresy series, putting him one behind Graham McNeill as the most prolific of the HH writers. The two of them are probably most responsible for crafting the direction that the Heresy has taken and to many readers of Black Library books they are the most talented and popular. Dan, of course, is also the writer of the 'Gaunt's Ghosts' series, which is the second most popular of the 40K series (behind the HH series now) and the series that made his 'bones,' so to speak.
When you pick-up Know No Fear and read the first page (maybe the first sentence!) you'll instantly know it's Dan writing. He has a definite style of his own, some love it and some hate it. One thing that he is very good at, is depicting ship-to-ship actions and everything else involved in orbital warfare. It's hard to write about 3-dimensional warfare without losing the reader, but Dan seems to have a knack for it. That's important in Know No Fear, because a great deal of the action takes place in the orbital areas surrounding Calth. Often, the various ship actions in WH40K books are briefly mentioned or just a side-show, but here they are fleshed out and well written.
One of my biggest problems with 40K books, and Dan is included, used to be that fight scenes would literally take up pages and pages of hack and slash that rarely propelled the story along...it just filled pages. I'm happy to say that this isn't the case in this book and it seems to be disappearing throughout the Black Library roster. The writers have certainly matured and the quality of writing is much better than it was years ago. There are plenty of fight scenes in this book, but they don't overwhelm the story and make your eyes glaze over. There are actually a couple scenes where you just go 'holy Emperor...did that just happen?'.
As I stated earlier, I'm not going to give the story away in this review. I do give this book a strong recommendation as a good read. If you're an HH fan, then it's a given you're going to read it anyway. I wasn't disappointed, unlike Deliverance Lost which I felt was the absolute worst of the HH books written so far, stick to Elves Mr. Thorpe..please! Know No Fear isn't the best of the HH books, but it certainly isn't the worst. One question though...
Almost every single one of Jim Wappel's models is of Golden Daemon quality! look on for some truly amazing painting. It has given me a lot of ideas (and inspiration) for my own stuff.
Every once in a while, GW will hid upcoming releases in plain sight. Well the other day I was surfing their blog on the Games Workshop main page and I stumbled across what I am sure is the next codex hiding right in front of me. Lets just jump in and see shall we?

First, follow this link GW WEBSITE. Now lets go over some bullet points on this post he made.

1. He is building an "all terminator army," - there are very few armies that can do this, GK, SW and DA

2. There are no chapter markings and no paint...anywhere! - Since when does GW not throw chapter markings and extreme painting on their models, seriously look through all the other blog posts and tell me when they don't go hard core "this is the chapter/ army," Here...Ill help LINK 1 LINK 2 LINK 3 LINK 4 I could go on, but you get the point. Why would GW not say "hey look at the DA this guy is making? well, lets go on to point #3.

3. The models themselves - Only DA and GK can have terminator apothecaries and we know it isn't a GK army. Terminator tech marines? Cool, huh? 2 terminator heavy weapons in a squad...and then...

4. The captain - For god's sake he has very baroque armor and is armed with a plasma cannon. This is covered up by the author saying "He can always count it as a combi-plasma (albeit a very large and impressive one) If he isn't a DA Captain, then I don't know what is.

5. The White Dwarf spines. We know at this point it is a Dark Angel.

So, with all that I am calling it now. No, I don't have an 'inside source,' or anything like that. I don't even read forums (Except the one I Mod) so I don't know what the rumor mongers are saying... Im just saying that this makes a ton of sense and GW has a history of hiding things in plain sight (Plastic daemon prince/ Trygon anyone?)

Well, what do you think? Would you like to see a DA codex coming soon that can have plasma cannon totting terminators? Comments/ musings/ rumors welcome!

Duke

Swags here in another update from the realm of pain and suffering that is the Chaos Wastelands.

Continuing on with the terrain discussion I'm going to start with the "Frozen Forest" today.

As such I needed some forest pieces on the far side of the board. Using existing terrain I had laying around I selected the position and used a chop saw to cut off any over hang.

This bunker is protected on all sides...except from other out flankers! Look out!!!

Next up we move over to the urban side and look at the "Pump House".
